Softshell Technologies

Fabrics for moving light and fast. Combining stretchable, water repellent, abrasion resistant, highly breathable shell materials with insulating buffer materials on the inside. Garments made with these fabrics can keep you drier and more comfortable than traditional layering systems of heavy shell jackets and insulation layers in all but the most extended rainy conditions. Combined with DriClime Base and Mid layers you can stay warm, dry and comfortable in virtually any condition. Since none of the layers will absorb moisture your body heat will continually push moisture vapor from the system. And you won’t have to adjust layers as often. Just add a lightweight waterproof shell to your pack and your ready for anything.

Marmot's definition of Softshell are garments made from fabrics with the 6 following characteristics in varying degrees.
• Durability - Abrasion resistance
• Stretch comfort fit
• Breathability - Moisture Vapor Transmission
• Wind resistance - Air permeability
• Water resistance
• Thermal Protection

Of these factors, Water resistance, Wind Resistance, Thermal Protection and Breathability will be the factors that most determine the positioning of the garments. Stretch and Durability are common to all, with less variance.

Marmot Softshell
Marmot Softshell is our collection of SoftShell garments conceived and designed based on the wide range of weather conditions and end use requirements. These garments span the performance continuum from mild weather, high aerobic conditions to cold, wet and less active conditions.
We categorize these garments into three groups with a hierarchy of characteristics based on fabric and design:

M1 – M2 – M3

M1 - Colder, wetter conditions with lower or intermittent aerobic output

Marmot Mosaic Softshell Fabrics
Like Mosaic art is comprised of different colored tiles arranged in patterns to create something that is larger than each individual tile, we have developed a number of new exclusive fabrics to meet the performance of Softshell and provide exceptional value. We take the tiles of: Water resistance, Wind resistance, Thermal, Stretch and Durability and rearrange them to create fabrics that match the varying conditions and activity levels of most outdoor activities. We also combine materials with different characteristics within a garment to provide a Zonal construction that takes advantage of each fabrics key attributes.
