eVENT® Fabric Technology from BHA Technologies

eVENT Fabric is a Direct Venting™ waterproof barrier that marks a significant advancement in waterproof clothing technology. Using proprietary and patented Dry System™ technology, eVENT Fabric sets a new standard for comfort by allowing perspiration to dissipate and vent without saturating the inside of the fabric.

At the core of eVENT Fabric is an ePTFE (expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene) film that has been rendered oil-repellant, and thereby free from body-oil contamination, via a method that retains both the inherent open-pore structure of the membrane as well as its hydrophobic properties. eVENT fabric technology provides maximum comfort for aerobic activity in harsh environments and keeps your clothing and footwear layers DRY INSIDE SO YOU CAN THRIVE OUTSIDE™. It does this by venting perspiration vapor through unimpeded microscopic pores engineered into a durable membrane.

What differentiates eVENT technology from all others?

Conventional W/B’s only achieve true venting by the opening of a zipper – such as a “pit-zip” – which is not very practical in a downpour. eVENT technology, on the other hand, is constantly venting through millions of microscopic pores in its membrane.

What differentiates eVENT technology from other waterproof- “breathables”?

While ePTFE membranes have been used for waterproof applications for over 25 years, it has been in such a way that its inherent breathability was reduced by the addition of a polyurethane layer that inhibited the free escape of perspiration vapor. “Rather than take an open-pore membrane and turn it into a closed-pore laminate,” explains Dr. Fred Wilson, one of BHA Technologies’ resident mad scientists, “our patented process lets us retain the natural venting ability of all these microscopic pores.”

Pertex®Endurance fabrics are coated with a microscopic thin layer of hydrophobic material (polyeurethane or PU). This layer is so thin that it hardly adds any weight nor does it affect the softness of the material considerably. Pertex®Endurance fabrics have one main objective - to provide maximum protection from moisture. The Endurance special fabric weave uses a larger diameter fibre near the PU film and a smaller fibre on the outside of the fabric. Since water wants to move from an area of low surface area to an area of high surface area, the Pertex weave actually wicks (pulls) body moisture to the outside of the garment.
